Meeting Maisha Yangu
A few weeks before the world shut down in February, 2020 Chris and Beth Bruno were able to travel with Restoration Project to Nairobi. Partnering with an international school and church, they offered a father-son and mother-daughter retreat and then spent a day with Buken and Joyce in their community— the informal settlement of Kawangare. Those were the early days of their vision for Maisha Yangu, but Buken and Joyce had big dreams! Over the next few years, a relationship developed over Zoom and then Chris and Restoration Project returned with 11 father-teen pairs in 2023 to see the explosion of work they had accomplished in their community through youth programs and outreach.
ReStory is helping Joyce become a trained counselor
Joyce is a mother of two young boys, a Goalball athlete, wife to Buken, and seeing-impaired. She first pursued a certificate in counseling to learn how to care for the kids enrolled in the programs of Maisha Yangu. Seeing their level of trauma and her need for more training, she joined a program to earn her degree. A voracious reader and serious student, she is now applying what she’s learning to her own life and that of her marriage! We are thrilled to help her achieve this goal of getting her degree.
